High blood pressure or hypertension is a type of disease to watch out for.
Hypertension that is not treated properly can cause sufferers to experience
complications such as heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, visual impairment,
cognitive impairment such as decreased brain ability, difficulty focusing, difficulty
remembering. Non-pharmacological treatment is one of them by consuming dark
chocolate, this food contains flavanols that can lower blood pressure. This study
aims to find out the effect of dark chocolate on the decrease in systolic blood
pressure in people with hypertension. The research design used in this study is
quasi experiment with the design used is pretest-posttest with control group . The
population of all people with hypertension aged 45-55 years in Banjarejo Village
in January 2021 as many as 75 respondents. The sample consisted of 2 groups, 21
respondents of treatment groups and 21 respondents of control groups. The
results of this study showed 11 respondents from the treatment group experienced
a decrease in systolic blood pressure after consuming dark chocolate 80% as
much as 100gr for 7 days. The Wilcoxon Test statistics test is known that the value
of p (0.0001) < α (0.05) means ha is accepted, so there is an effect of dark
chocolate on changes in systolic blood pressure in people with hypertension.
Thus, researchers can conclude that the consumption of dark chocolate has a
significant effect in lowering systolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients
compared with respondents from the control group who did not consume dark
chocolate. The content of flavonols contained in dark chocolate is able to inhibit
the work of ACE so that the change of angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 decreases
and ultimately makes the vasodilated virgin vessels and blood pressure decrease.
