Cosmetics is one product that is used routinely and continues to take care of women and men of all ages, hoping to make the appearance more beautiful and attractive. However, cosmetic products can have a negative effect on the body, one of which is a facial whitening cream. According to research from YPKKI (the foundation for empowering Indonesian health consumers) in April 2012, 30 facial whitening products on the market showed that there were 5 registered brands of facial whitening cosmetics but still contained mercury (Hg), albeit with small amounts. This study aims to determine the presence of mercury (Hg) in facial whitening creams using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) found in the market "B" of Malang City. This research is a quantitative descriptive study with quota sampling technique. The sample used in this study was 6 samples of face whitening cream. The results showed that the whitening cream samples examined for merukui (Hg) levels were all positively containing the highest levels of mercury (Hg) with 1703, 16 mg / kg (sample code A6) and lowest levels of 245.90 mg / kg (sample code A5). The conclusion of this study is that there are many types of whitening creams that circulate freely in the market so that consumers are expected to be more careful in choosing creams that are used daily, especially the type of whitening cream.
