Thalassemia is a disease of globin chain synthesis disorders. Due to the low production of globin chains, red blood cells in the bone marrow are destroyed, resulting in anemia and requiring blood transfusion treatment. The national prevalence of Thalassemia in Indonesia in 2017 is 8,616 cases. the effects of thalassemia treatment are viral, bacterial and parasitic infections. White blood cells function to help the body fight infectious diseases as part of the immune system. The purpose of this study was to determine the number and morphology of leukocytes in thalassemia patients at the POPTI Foundation in Malang. This type of research is descriptive with a sample of 10 respondents who fit the inclusion criteria using a quota sampling technique. Data collection is done by identifying blood samples, then examined in the stone hajj rsia laboratory to determine the number and morphology of leukocytes. The research method uses automatic and manual. The automated method uses ABX Micromax and manually uses peripheral blood smear evaluation to observe the morphology of leukocyte cells. The results of the examination by automated methods found that 7 people with normal leukocyte counts and 3 people had leukocytopenia, and manual methods found 9 people with normal leukocyte morphology and 1 person with eosinophil hypersegmentation. The conclusion of this study found 3 people leukocytopenia, hyposegmented eosinophils in one sample. Therefore the respondent must maintain the immune system to avoid the effects of post-treatment.
