The Effect of Dark Chocolate on Controlling Systolic Blood Pressure in Hypertensive Patients
XMLABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: High blood pressure or hypertension is a type of disease that must be
wary of. Hypertension that is not treated properly can cause the sufferer to experience
complications such as heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, visual disturbances, cognitive
disorders such as decreased brain ability, difficulty focusing, difficulty remembering. One
of the non-pharmacological treatments is consuming dark chocolate, this food contains
flavanols that can lower blood pressure.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the effect of dark chocolate on reducing
systolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients.
METHOD: The research design used in this study is a Quasi Experiment with a pretest-
posttest design with a control group (pretest–posttest with control group. The population
of all hypertension sufferers aged 45-55 years in Banjarejo Village in January 2021 as
many as 75 respondents The sample consisted of 2 groups, 21 respondents from the
treatment group and 21 respondents from the control group.
RESULTS: The results of this study showed that 11 respondents from the treatment group
experienced a decrease in systolic blood pressure after consuming 100gr of 80% dark
chocolate for 7 days.
CONCLUSION: The Wilcoxon Test statistic test is known that the p value (0.0001) <
(0.05) means Ha is accepted, so there is an effect of giving dark chocolate on changes in
systolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
